Dear Rafal-Ji, Namaste,
Would it be correct to infer that, Sy ruling 8th. house in Makar lagna would indicate an inherenent and general weakness in matters related to Surya in such a chart (assuming other factors to be same) ? e.g. tendency to have lack of self confidence etc. for natives having Makar lagna? Likewise in other lagnas where Sy is ruling a Dusthaana?

Depends on sambadha between Shani and Sun for Makara Lagna. It can give enmity coming from administrators and one can neglect own health, more depends on forth bhava, AL and rest of chart. Sura Graha feel bad in eight bhava but this yoga is good for spirituality..Harsha Yoga..when there are no planets in sixth..shad ripus!
BPHS states that eight lord is not bad when eight bhava is lorded by Luminaries. Strong eight lord gives good longevity.
